Why you don't need discipline to get fit.
I thought self-discipline was the key to getting fit.
But I now see it as a subtle form of suppression.
It’s forcing yourself to do something you don’t feel like doing.
Most coaches, trainers, and fitness gurus will tell you that this is desirable.
But I’m here today to share with you a different perspective.
I’ll start by acknowledging the benefits of discipline.
And finish by showing you an easier way.
Self-discipline gets you to show up.
And as we all know, consistency is the key to results.
If there’s one thing you want more than anything, maybe you should develop discipline around your health, fitness, or business.
Jocko Willick, Navy Seal and best-selling author says:
Discipline equals freedom.
But I believe there’s an easier way.
It can be found with understanding.
Look for the deeper reason.
Develop awareness.
Progress doesn’t have to be a struggle.
It starts with peeling back the layers of mental resistance.
Young kids haven’t forgotten about this strategy.
They’re always asking why.
Ask why at least 5 times.
Let’s say you want to develop the habit of going to the gym.
I don’t feel like going to the gym.
Why?
I’m tired.
Why?
I didn’t sleep well.
Why?
I was up late watching Netflix.
Why?
I wanted to relax after a long day at work.
Why?
I have too much going on in my life right now.
We’re getting closer to the root of the problem but we must keep asking: "why?”.
Once you discover the real reason you don’t feel like going to the gym you no longer need discipline.
Awareness → Understanding → Effortless Action
Reduce the struggle by digging deeper.
When you’re clear on your values you don’t need motivation.
A day without exercise is a part of my anti-vision. It’s easier for me to exercise than it is not to exercise.
When you're clear on why, you can make progress without self-discipline.
Hope this helps,
