The most common mistake people make at the gym.
Lifting weights only for muscle mass is the most common mistake people make.
The muscles I could see in the mirror used to dictate my gym routine.
But working in healthcare has changed my perspective on fitness.
It’s hard to believe how unfit our population is.
Injuries cause a poor quality of life.
Moving daily is the secret to staying fit and avoiding dysfunction.
Exercising not just for muscle mass but also for balance, mobility, and coordination.
So what should you do to avoid injuries?
One major change I made at the gym is the addition of full range of motion exercise.
Here are 3 examples of how to exercise for joint mobility (while still building strength):
Foot:
Shoulder:

Lower back:

Less stretching when mobility is built into your workout.
You might feel like it’s a step backward because you’ll need to use lighter weight.
But flexibility will help you move more efficiently.
Joint mobility is how you stay young.
Sitting and sedentary lifestyles are a big problem.
Try full range of motion exercise to escape your joint stiffness.
Hope this helps,
Tyler Van Acker, DPT
PS
If you have stiff feet, I can help.
After a full year of treating only feet, I created my own system, Barefoot Fitness that includes the technique I just shared with you in this email.
But the best part is seeing the difference you can make in other people’s lives.
Like the oncologist, Dr. Dinunno who after working with me said:
“After 5 months of pain, 2 failed steroid injections. All it took was 6 weeks working with Tyler helped me to get back to walking without pain.”
