Talent vs. Determination
There are lots of talented people who never achieve anything, but not that many determined people who don't. -Paul Graham
The person who looks like they have it all figured out just has more experience.
Your outcomes are determined by your ability to iterate.
Can you accept failure and make a plan to avoid making the same mistake?
Most people don’t want to face the reality that every action TODAY carries opportunity costs.
If you do the same thing you have always done, do not expect your life to get better.
You don't just decide to become a new person.
You try a new way of doing to experience a new way of being.
Take the next step.
You either get success or you learn from your mistakes
So what is stopping us from taking action (to achieve our dreams).
Or a better question. Where’s the friction?
Most people try to overcome friction with will power.
But they always lose to the person that takes effortless action.
In 2019, I came across a book called “Tiny Habits” written by the Stanford professor, BJ Fogg.
I realized how powerful this could be so I become a Tiny Habits certified coach shortly after.
I learned how to engineer new habits by reducing the friction.
Said differently, make the new behavior as easy as possible.
Tiny Habits 3 step Recipe.
Anchor the behavior in your current routine.
-”After I… (insert a daily habit you already have)”
Perform a small version of your desired behavior.
-,I will… (insert tiny habit)
Celebrate.
-Acknowledge the progress in a way that is meaningful to you.
Example:
If I wanted to start a habit of going on a walk every morning I would write:
“After I brush my teeth in the morning, I will put on my walking shoes.”
Shoes on “Atta you Big Cat”
You may think that putting on your shoes every morning isn't going to get you very far.
But you’ll have a WAY better chance at going for that walk.
Taking small steps toward your ideal self is the path to self improvement.
Get it out of your head that the small stuff doesn't matter.
Thoughts become words, words become actions, actions become habits, habits become character, character becomes destiny. -Lau Tzu, Chinese Philospher
Behavior change is complex but Tiny Habits are a useful tool to start seeing progress.
Make your desired action is the most likely action.
Friction comes in many forms but there is always a way to smooth out the process.
Non-negotiable daily habits can take you to places you didn't think were possible.
I hope you enjoyed this weeks email and it inspires you take some action.
Your good friend,
Tyler
