Support is a solution
Myth #4
I became a foot pain expert by accident.
After being laid off following the COVID-19 pandemic, I was looking for any job I could find.
I ended up working in a podiatrist's office, where I saw only foot injuries.
People with chronic foot pain also had orthotics and/or supportive shoes.
And the best foot pain exercises I found were all without shoes.
I realized the key to escaping foot pain is to slowly stress your feet.
Modern society has made it a challenge:
We sit more.
We move a lot less.
We only walk on flat ground
Our bodies are made to be barefoot.
Feet should be poked, turned, and twisted with each step we take.

Instead of searching for more shoe support, build strength in your feet.
I get it, it can be a challenge to transition out of supportive shoes.
Because I also used to think supportive Brooks, Hoka, Nike, and On shoes were helping me.
But my feet and toes are happy I switched to shoes with a flat sole and a wider toe box.

Your feet crave the barefoot experience.
I’m not saying you have to throw out all your old shoes.
But I would like you to consider how inefficient movement is impacting your life.
Physical injuries:
Drain your energy
Holds you back from exercise
Increase anxiety when you can’t work out
Invest in your future by building resilience.
Hope this helps,
Tyler Van Acker, Doctor of Physical Therapy
